Festuca rubra

This species divides into three botanical groups: Festuca rubra rubra, Festuca rubra commutata and Festuca rubra trichophylla. The key difference between them is their capacity to form rhizomes or tillers. Rhizome formation is strong in Festuca rubra rubra and very limited in Festuca rubra trichophylla, while Festuca rubra commutata forms tufts. It is a fine-leaved, late-establishing species. Because it needs less nitrogen during growth, it grows more slowly than Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis. It performs comfortably on acidic soils, in regions with limited water and in shaded areas.

It has very fine leaves and forms a dense sward. Disease resistance is one of its distinguishing traits, so it can be used successfully in lawns and landscaping.
